Sam Long

BMus (Studying)

Sam is a classically trained pianist and saxophonist. He has been learning since age 5, and has always been passionate about sharing his knowledge and love for music with others. He began piano when he first started school, and has been studying and playing ever since. Shortly after, Sam began learning saxophone, and he is currently studying a B.Mus in classical saxophone. He has completed his Grade 8 exam in piano, and is currently working towards his Licentiate Diploma (L.MusA) on Saxophone.

Sam’s goal is to kindle the love of music in students. Cultivating technically proficient students is only part of his motivation for teaching, as he helps students find their artistic voices, be independent learners, and supports them with problem solving. Sam asks questions to make students form their own interpretations and to have their own musical decisions.

As a performer, Sam has played in numerous competitions and concerts. Sam recently won the Open Saxophone division in the QCASS competition, along with having won several other divisions in the past. He performed at the Nexus New Music concert series at the Queensland Conservatorium, premiering new works from Australian composers, and was a finalist for the O’Brien Family Prize at the University of Queensland in his first year of studying. Sam is openly committed to always furthering himself as a player, and hopes to pass down his knowledge andexperience to both advanced and brand-new players.
